Maranatha International Orphanage Center was conceptualized when the president of the organization realized her dreams of been able to support children who are socially alienated as a result of losing their parents to AIDS. Now living in the United States of America, she is using MAIOC as a way to help children that find themselves in this predicament. Most of these children are expelled from their households because other family members deem them unclean and contagious. Many members of the external families are usually not financially capable of taking care of these children. This was a common practice in the communities she lived and worked in her home country Ghana. For socially displaced infants with no moral support, life becomes very challenging at such an early stage. This is the reason why the president who has dealt with these situations is now lending a hand to the many children back in her home country whose fate can be changed through organizations such as MAIOC.
The actualization of this organization is soon to be materialized; 10th August 2008 to be exact was the registration date and official commencement of activities. The state of North Carolina has already granted tax exemption to this MAIOC. The organization is at the planning, budgeting and organizing stages at the moment. Personnel and staffing needs are been dealt with at the moment to ensure that it is fully operational by the 15th of January 2009. The organization has already achieved its short term goal of land acquisition for permanent premises that will serve as permanent residence for displaced children. In the long run, MAIOC is working towards the construction of a fully functional multi-purpose facility that will lodge, feed, medicate and educate these children. A daycare center will be attached to this facility to help toddlers in their early developmental stages of life. Counseling services will also be available to children who have been abused physically, emotionally and mentally as a result of their parents’ death.
The organization’s strategy will be to identify such children from remote parts of the country before their parents die. This is because there is the risk of losing such children to the street life full of crime, drug abuse, violence and further transmission of the virus if they are infected. Children brought into the center will then be tested for the HIV virus and cared for medically if they test positive. In the short run MAIOC is set to contract the educational needs of the children to public and private educational institutions but seeks to have its own on site in the long run. MAIOC believes this is the only way to enhance the lives of these children in order for them to become contributing and accepted members of the society.
Registered nurses only are going to be mandated to carry out medical activities with visiting medical doctors who will routinely pay visits to the site. Teachers are also going to be employed onsite to educate the children from kindergarten to middle school that will be on-site and then on to high school off-site but still be supported in all ways by MAIOC.
The whole operation will be funded through donations, grants and other forms of financial aid provided by the general any persons or organization.
This organization will serve as many children as possible found to be socially displaced and orphaned as a result of death from AIDS. We are going work with health officials and institutions located in the most affected parts of the country to be able to identify such children. This means, our organization will be notified by public and social health personnel and institutions of any HIV-AIDS deaths that have caused the children involved to be socially displaced. The organization would like to have an annual intake of 100 children to whom these services will be provided. We would like to grow our organization’s capacity to increase this intake quota as we gain more financial support to fuel our operations. MAIOC will take full responsibility for the children once they are taken in with the consent of their parents before they die or the family headmen. This will be done with no financial obligation to the child while been catered for or in the future. Our premises are located 50 miles from the capital city in a community called Kasoa in the central region of Ghana. This is a 24/7 care facility that will cater to all the needs of their wards.
Funding shall be solicited from financial organizations, international and domestic donors, philanthropic individuals and potential supporters of all kinds. Our website has been capacitated to process financial donation transactions. Other non-financial donations such as vehicles shall also be received without any third party dealings to profit from any form of resale. The organization will need vehicles due to the fact that it is located further from the capital city where most of our supplies will have to be purchased and transported in. Organization executives and staff are therefore not allowed to use any of such assets received for personal interests or dealings of any kind. These funds will be used to construct and purchase most assets such as land, premises, vehicles and supplies. Operational transactions such as feeding, medical supplies acquisition and paying salaries of employees will all be taken care of through financial support received from donors. These will be short term financial obligations MAIOC will need to service routinely. The major cost drivers that will influence MAIOC when it is fully operational are the number of children and the number of employees needed to cater for them. An effective management will be put in place to wisely appropriate and allocate the organization’s resources in order to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in all aspects of the value creation process of MAIOC. A board of directors will also be appointed as an external review committee to ensure that the president and staff are effectively running the organization. This will be done bi-annually.
